How does the ranking system work?
We have three stages for ranking beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. At the end of each stage there is a test. Once completing those 9 levels there are tests for Assistant Instructor, Full Instructor and then Sifu. Test requirements can be modified for students who have restrictions. The Children’s ranking system has been broken up even further with more testing levels at beginner stages. All students will feel that they have earned their rank and will be very proud at the completion of testing!

What is the difference between Kung fu and Karate?
This is a tricky question and a trick question depending on what you are looking for. Both Kung fu and Karate are hard Martial arts styles that teach Forms or Katas as well as fighting techniques. Generally speaking Kung fu is more fluid and circular than Karate when comparing its movements although even that is not always the case for both styles. Kung fu originates from China around 5,000 years ago. Karate got its name in Japan but its roots can be traced back to Okinawa (now part of Japan) and from Okinawa back to China where they learned mostly Shaolin White Crane Kung fu. Okinawa blended its style of Okinawa Te with the White Crane and brought it to Japan where it was mixed with Japanese arts and renamed Karate. But that’s neither here nor there. To say one is better than another is foolish and you must find a good teacher regardless of the style and its background. As a side note: The reason you will see many more Karate schools than Kung fu schools is simple. After World War 2 the Japanese taught us Karate and it was brought to the United States and established widely over the years. Kung Fu did not go mainstream in the US until the 1970’s when Bruce Lee became a Kung fu cinema sensation. Since then Kung fu masters have been teaching in the United States spreading many various styles of Kung fu.
